In terms of advice for pursuing legal knowledge of chemistry for legitimate purposes, I would suggest the following:
If you really want learn about it, I suggest enrolling in a college class, esp. one that has weekly lab time. Start with Intro to Chem if you know nothing at all, then you can take Organic-Chem in 1-2 yesar after that.
If you wanna learn on your own, the classes are still a good ideas, but I highly recommend getting James W. Zubricks book called "The Organic Chem Lab Survival Manual". It's written for chem students that have to do synths in class in their labs and come up with correct products in correct weights and such, and the book gives them tips on how to do it right. The advice it gives is good advice for anyone actually performing any chemical synthesis or operation. Also check out Vogels' Organic Chemistry book.
For hands-on, I would start with extracting some plants. There are 'teks' throughout the Internet that show one how to do these procedures from start to finish. Basic priciples are used in plant extraction that are crucial to O-Chem synths, and it will give you an idea of what it's like working with something where you are using equipment like glassware and chems to finally yield and purify a final product. Start simple, then you can work your way up littel by little, mastering each process along the way...
Classes help!! If you can't go to a college, then take some online chemistry classes and/or/then watch some chem tutorials. They are fun to watch, and they will help you understand how to conduct various operations in the lab, such as vacuum distillation, filtration, crystallizion, reflux, additons, etc.
Hope this helps you to get on the right path... above all else, be safe, be respectful of others, and be ethical-- people who don't respect the process and who don't take precautions get fucked, either by the Man or by Karma...
